Hot Rock Massages and the Holy Spirit

"If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
Luke 11:13
Happy birthday to me!

My birthday happened last month and my aunt and sister-in-law gifted me a hot rock massage scheduled for today.

I loved every second of it.

I've been treated with a massage in the past and once before experienced a hot rock massage. Something about the warm rocks working out tension in my muscles gives me a longing for more. Every part of my body felt relaxed and the weight of the world on my shoulders seemed transferred to the weight of the rocks. When the therapist whispered, "Your massage is finished," I longed for more. I wish the massage lasted another three hours, or I wish I could experience a hot rock massage each morning before waking up to the chaos. But I can't.

My spa day was a gift. I don't get to reschedule regular spa appointments and treasure the rare occasion of relaxation under the hands of a therapist trained to work out knotted stress. The feeling created by the massage reminded me of my longing for the Holy Spirit.

At times, the Holy Spirit speaks clearly, encourages in perfect time, and surprises with messages of love. Encounters like these ease the tension of my eternal being trudging through a broken world. Luke emphasizes the desire of my Heavenly Father yearning to give me the gift of the stress-relieving, life-giving Holy Spirit. I only need ask.

Come to think of it, I didn't even ask for a massage from my aunt and sister-in-law! They knew I would enjoy such a gift and felt it would bless me. How much more does God know my needs and desires?

My asking for more of the Holy Spirit doesn't hinge on any holiday and costs nothing! God grants the Holy Spirit freely and we maintain access to the Spirit as believers anytime, anywhere.

Can I do a Holy Spirit birthday dance every day? Strike a beat!

My Father in heaven, I ask for more of the Holy Spirit! Please gift me with encounters, nudges, and visions today. Speak directly to me in my world. I often feel overwhelmed and weighed down by the sin and death surrounding me. Holy Spirit, come! Work out the tension in my soul, energize me with the Divine. May my encouragement spur me on for kingdom building ministry. Amen.
