Creation by my Creative God
Well, we'll see how this goes. I really want to stick with our pastor's challenge to read through the Bible this year (2013). I started today and will try to continue as I read, with posts a couple times a week...ideally, every day.
Today, I read Genesis 1-3. This is pretty much the account of Creation and The Fall. I am familiar with this passage and the ideas represented here, but something struck me again as I read. God is so creative. He spoke into a "formless...empty darkness" and created light, weather patterns, living beings...
I love the creative process. I am a teacher and creating an interesting Language Arts lesson is a highlight for me (yeah, I'm weird like that!). It starts with something small, then just begins to balloon and bloom into something that I think will be successful. When I begin to share the lesson with students it is hard to contain my excitement. Now, on most days, the students will think I'm off my rocker again to be so excited about what they consider mundane tasks, but sometime...sometimes, they get excited too! When I create something, my excitement is difficult to contain.
This makes me want to imagine God with some of the same tendencies. He is not creating a simple lesson plan here, but an entire world! I can imagine Him (along with the trinity as it refers to "us" when referring to the image of man) brainstorming the possibilities of light...weather...creatures...us! What sources of light did he scratch (if any!) before settling on the sun and moon? What other options for weather were there? Did he think of all the creatures in one swoop with small variations or was each one carefully planned with quirks and abilities? And what about us? Were our ears always part of the plan? Oh, the questions I have for Him!
After his ideas materialized, I can imagine his excitement to watch the whole thing play out! I imagine him assessing the handwork of flying birds, interaction between creatures, and of course human interaction (Language...it's an art:). Is He like me? Does He love to watch a plan come together?!?!
Now, as a teacher, I can also appreciate the loss of control and a glitch in the plan. Man, how many times has a student derailed a perfectly executed lesson? So here, in Genesis, we witness the Fall of man. Adam and Eve take matters into their own hands, attempt to deceive God, and reap a punishment covering all of mankind for all time. God's plan was not to watch His creation fail...that's what I think. God demonstrates his creativity once again, by offering Adam, Eve, and the rest of us another way.
Genesis 1-3 certainly does cover creation, God's way....God's creative way. I can't wait to watch the rest of the story play out in God's timing and with His orchestration. Not only will I discover new aspects of this story as I read through the Bible, but will also surely discover how this plan is playing out today in humanity and in me.
Bring it on 2013!
